Valdez is the Democratic nominee for governor of Texas. She previously served three terms as Dallas County sheriff and was the only Hispanic female sheriff in the United States and one of only four female sheriffs in Texas. Before becoming sheriff in 2005, Valdez had over three decades of experience in law enforcement, including work in homeland security and anti-terrorism investigations.
